i_love_boys asked:

how much should I expect to pay? A case has already been opened, I just need a modification of child custody order. I currently have a restraining order against the father, and I feel its not in the child’s best interest to be around a violent maniac.

Check with your local State’s attorney office. There may be advocate groups that will help you pay for your lawyer.

When I changed mine I didn’t need an attorney. You can petition the court without one but unless you are very careful you may end up doing it ten times like I did. Just make sure you have all the necessary paperwork. You can search the internet for the papers and some sites will break it down by state for you.

Is the restaining order for you or you and your child???This will make some difference in how it will be handled. If your child is not listed on PO then the visitation is still in effect but pick up and drop off may be changed.
Have you gone to the first hearing of the protective order?
Your best bet is an attorney, and you can have it stipulated to have the defendent pay for fees .
