Kalani asked:

I live in NY and need some help figuring out where the hell I start with this process. We’ve only been married 6 months, no kids, no real assets. We agree that the marriage is over, and don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a divorce. Where can I find some free legal advice, someone that can point me in the right direction?

I live in Michigan, and here, we have our local women’s center that gives free advice to women who are contemplating divorce.

I think it is every Tuesday and Thursday that attorneys come there and they listen to you and what you have to say, and if they think your case is worthwhile, then they will take your case and work out a payment plan for you that will be easy on your Wallet.

Do you have a citizens advice bureau? Or try ringing your local court house, or library for information on a free legal information service.
You also really need to ask yourself why you both married in the first place and if you can both work on recapturing the romance? Marriage takes work and time….so try working things out before moving on….

Go to your local county/city/government website. They should have loads of advice and information that will deal specifically with divorce in your jurisdiction. Another option would be to call the NY bar association. They should be able to point you in the right direction - at the very least, give you the contact information of an attorney who would do a free consultation.

Ask the older women you know (40-50), half of them will probably be happy to rant on their own experiences with past husbands.

I do know a very good attorney in NY. Some one very special to me … as far as free advice, I do not know. But he is a VERY good divorce attorney, and he has very reasonable rates. Give him a call , he just might be able to give you some answers you need for free.

I agree with Michelle D, find an attorney who offers free consultations. Also, if you live near a law school, see if they offer any programs where the law students work Pro Bono.

Plus, there is a ton of research material on the Web. Just make sure you do your homework if you are going to try and do it,Pro Se. NY has some pretty archaic Divorce Laws.

Your best bet is to go to the link below. Post your case in the appropriate forum, and be very detailed but brief. You’ll get good answers over there and I’m a senior member so if I see your post I’ll answer you there as well as other attorneys will.
